The design of a retail establishment is defined as the architectural and aesthetic decisions taken to design the space where a company’s products will be sold, displayed and promoted. A brand’s visual communication is one of the most important factors in generating consumer interest and confidence.
To better understand the importance of store design, it’s essential to understand how retail stores have evolved from traditional brick-and-mortar establishments to today’s highly visual, consumer-focused environment. In the past, consumers were content to see products displayed on the shelves or in the bins of their local retailers. It wasn’t until the middle of the 20th century that department stores began using large promotional displays in shopping areas to attract customers’ attention. Department stores cooperated with manufacturers to create showcases that presented products in an attractive way. At that time, however, there was still very little interaction between shoppers and these displays.
In 1960s America, consumerism was booming and shopping was becoming a social experience. This evolution in consumer behavior led retailers such as Sears to create large window displays that allowed customers to touch or try on the merchandise they wished to buy. A few decades later, this practice became widespread, as stores began to use open windows to allow customers to see products up close.
