Store design is an essential element of a brand’s communication policy. According to the GFK Eurisko study, colors and signage are the first elements to attract the consumer’s attention. The aim of store design is to promote sales in a way that brings value to both the customer and the brand. For example, Target uses bright colors on its signage, creating a vibrant atmosphere that draws customers into its stores. In contrast, Walmart has a more corporate tone with black and white signage and gray floors, suggesting that they are more interested in cost reduction than style.
The layout of a store also contributes to its success. Aisles should be wide enough for two people to walk side by side, and items should be organized by type (food at eye level) or by department (clothes on shelves). Decide early on whether you want an open floor plan or partitions between departments. You can have several entrances to your store, or one central entrance so that customers have a clear idea of where they’re going.
One aspect of store design that is often overlooked is the use of mirrors. Mirrors can make products appear larger or give customers a sense of space when placed near display areas or windows.
